NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Continuing non-conference play and its 17-game, month-long road trip, the Niagara University baseball team (0-11) travels to West Virginia University (4-9) for a doubleheader at Hawley Field Tuesday. Game 1 of the doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m.
The Purple Eagles are coming off two losses to the University of South Alabama this past weekend.
In the two losses, Niagara was led by the hitting of junior Mike Medici (Latham, N.Y.) and Brian Clifford (Buffalo).
Medici led the team with five hits and three runs scored against the Jaguars in the weekend series, scoring a team-high three runs. This season, the junior catcher has a .308 batting average and a .410 slugging percentage.
Clifford, a sophomore outfielder, leads the team with seven RBI this season, hitting .313 from the plate in 10 games.
Niagara starters for Tuesday’s games against the Mountaineers have yet to be determined.
West Virginia, playing in the Big East Conference, enters its doubleheader with the Purple Eagles having lost two of three games against Cornell this past weekend.
Senior centerfielder Lee Fritz leads the team with a .409 batting average and a .682 slugging percentage, with a team-high 13 RBI. He has drawn a team-high five walks this season, leading the Mountaineers with a .463 on-base percentage.
Behind Fritz, senior Chad McKown leads the team with three home runs, hitting .353 from the plate with six RBI this season. McKown has a team-high six doubles.
With starters not yet determined for West Virginia, senior Shawn Miller leads the team with five starts. Miller has a 1-2 record with an 8.38 ERA in 19 1-3 innings. Senior Chris Amedro (2-1) leads the team with two wins in four appearances. Amedro has a 5.30 ERA, holding his opponents to a .194 batting average.
Last season, Niagara lost, 4-2, to West Virginia at Hawley Field, facing the Mountaineers, March 30, 2004.
