Sophomore Emily Montgomery scored the game-winning goal in the 58th minute.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Niagara University women’s soccer team (4-3-0) defeated Youngstown State University (0-7-1), 2-1, Friday at Stambaugh Stadium, ending a three-game losing streak.

With the score tied 1-1 in the second half, sophomore midfielder Emily Montgomery (Oshawa, Ont.) scored her fourth goal of the season, heading in a corner kick by junior Amber Niece (Port Colbourne, Ont.) in the 58th minute. Montgomery led the Purple Eagles with six shots in the contest.

As a team, Niagara outshot the Penguins, 20-13, in the victory.

"We deserved to come away with the win," Niagara head coach Peter Veltri said. "We played much better defensively and hopefully we can continue to improve heading into conference play."

After falling behind 1-0 in the 10th minute, following a goal by Youngstown State junior forward Jessica Yarter, Niagara tied the game in the 28th minute. Scoring her first collegiate goal, freshman Natalie Frost’s (Elmira, N.Y.) shot from inside the Penguins’ penalty area deflected off a defender and past goalkeeper Mia Railing.

Picking up her fourth win of the season, junior goalkeeper Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.) made seven saves for the Purple Eagles. Railing made 12 saves in the loss for the Penguins.

Niagara, which moves to 6-0-0 all-time against Youngstown State, enters Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play in its next contest. The Purple Eagles face crosstown-rival Canisius at Lewiston-Porter Stadium Tuesday at 7 p.m.
