DETROIT, Mich. – Despite a hat trick by freshman forward Brittany Bisnott (Brampton, Ont.), the Niagara University women’s soccer team (3-3-0) lost its third consecutive game, falling to the University of Detroit (3-3-1), 6-4, at Titan Field Friday.
Bisnott, who tallied the Purple Eagles’ first three goals in the loss, led the offensive efforts of Niagara, taking a team-high eight shots in the contest and scoring her fourth, fifth and sixth goals of the season.
Defensively the team allowed six goals against the Titans, conceding 15 goals in its past three games.
"Defensively, we’re having a lot of difficulties," Niagara head coach Peter Veltri said. "This is a part of our game that we need to change before conference play begins."
Led by a career-high four goals by sophomore forward Mary Parker, Detroit took a 3-1 lead into halftime behind two penalty kick goals by Parker.
Down by two goals at the start of the second half, the Purple Eagles scored three goals in a span of six minutes to take a 4-3 lead over the Titans.
Bisnott opened the second half scoring for Niagara, finishing a loose ball in front of the Detroit net in the 50th minute. Just five minutes later, Bisnott scored her third goal of the contest, beating Detroit goalkeeper Alisson Dube on a one-on-one. Bisnott got free behind the Titan defense off a lead pass from teammate Amber Niece (Port Colbourne, Ont.).
The Purple Eagles took their only lead of the game 47 seconds later when sophomore midfielder Emily Montgomery (Oshawa, Ont.) scored an unassisted goal in the 56th minute.
The lead was short-lived, as Parker tied the game for Detroit in the 66th minute, finishing a cross from Judith Atwood. Parker scored the game-winning goal two minutes later, beating Niagara goalkeeper Katy Owings (Annapolis, Md.) with a shot from the right side of the penalty area.
Titan midfielder Shelly Piccirillo added the final Detroit goal in the 72nd minute, finishing a rebound in the Niagara goalmouth.
With shots tied, 19-19, Dube made nine saves for the Titans for her third win of the season. Owings made seven saves in the loss.
Niagara returns to action Sept. 24, traveling to Youngstown State for a non-conference game at Stambaugh Stadium.
