Purple Eagle Baseball Team Travels to West Virginia

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University baseball team continues its 20-game road trip when it travels south to Huntington, W. Va., for a three-game series this weekend with Marshall University at University Heights on the Marshall campus.

The Purple Eagles open the series with an 11 a.m. doubleheader Saturday and then a single game beginning at 1 p.m., on Sunday.

Niagara enters the weekend looking for its first win of the season. The Purple Eagles dropped two games, 16-9 and 12-3, at Wofford March 1. Marshall stands at 3-7 on the season and play Concord tonight. It is coming off a 14-4 loss to the College of Charleston on Feb. 20.

Niagara sophomore Matt Schafer (Clinton Park, N.Y.) had a solid opening weekend, hitting .750 with three hits and a run in four at-bats. Preseason all-conference selection Mike Medici (Latham, N.Y.) was 4 for 7 with a run and a RBI. Senior Tim Fitzgerald (Orchard Park, N.Y.) leads the team in RBI with three, including two that came in the second game.

Nine Purple Eagle pitchers saw action on the mound last weekend. They have a combined ERA of 13.50 over 14 innings. A total of 21 earned runs were given up and 30 hits.

Marshall is led by junior Chris Monaco who is hitting .355 with 11 hits, two doubles and five RBI. He is also 7 for 8 in stolen bases. Senior Francois Lamore leads the Thundering Herd with six doubles, 12 hits and eight RBI. Marshall has six players hitting over .300.

On the mound, the Thundering Herd pitching staff has a 6.06 ERA in 81.2 innings. They have given up 90 hits, 66 runs and 55 earned runs.
