Purple Eagles Down West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Three runs in the fourth inning was all it took to help Niagara University (6-13) beat West Virginia (8-14), 4-2, in baseball Tuesday at Hawley Field.

Trailing 1-0 going into the top of the fourth, Niagara took advantage of four errors to score its runs. Vince Ircandia got on with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, went to third on a passed ball and then scored when Reed Eastley got to first on an error. Eastley then scored when Mike Alati singled and West Virginia committed back-to-back errors. Alati scored the game-winning run when Paul Solini hit a sacrifice fly.

The Mountianeers came within one run, 3-2, in the fifth, but Niagara scored an insurance run in the eighth. Alati got to first on an error, stole second and scored on a Andrew MacNevin single to right.

Alati, Ircandia and MacNevin were all 2 for 4 on the day and Solini and MacNevin picked up runs batted in.

Mike Radanovic threw three innings and allowied one hit and one run before retiring with an injury. Kyle Nicoletta finished the game, going six innings and allowing five hits and one run while striking out four. It was Nicoletta's second win of the season.

Niagara returns to action Thursday when it hosts St. Bonaventure at John P. Bobo Field at 1 p.m. in the Purple Eagles home opener.
