Postseason On the Line for the Volleyball Team

Junior Michelle LeSouder

The Niagara University volleyball team (7-16, 5-3) has postseason play on the line when it travels to Buffalo Saturday for a match against cross-town rival Canisius (10-15, 3-5).

The 1 p.m. match is at the Koessler Athletic Center and admission to the event is $3.

SETTING THE SCENE

Postseason play hangs in the balance for the Purple Eagles Saturday. Niagara needs to beat their arch rival Canisius and hope for either Saint Peter’s or Rider to lose one of their matches this weekend for the Purple Eagles to earn their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference postseason bid since 1995.

With a 5-3 record, Niagara is in fourth place, behind Fairfield (6-1), Iona (6-1) and Saint Peter’s (5-2), and ahead of Rider (4-3). With a win over Canisius, the Purple Eagles improve to 6-3. The best Rider can finish is 6-3, but Niagara has the tiebreaker with its win last weekend.

Should the Purple Eagles, Rider and Saint Peter’s end in a three-way tie at 6-3 or 5-4, Niagara would finish out of playoff contention due to its loss to Saint Peter’s and Rider’s victory over the Peahens.

The last time Niagara beat Canisius in Buffalo was Sept. 19, 2001, with a 3-1 victory in non-conference action.

A LOOK AT THE PURPLE EAGLES

Junior Jennifer Hansford had been handling all the setting duties, averaging 9.93 assists per game. She is also one of three players digging two-or-more attacks a game (2.28).

Defensively, Niagara is digging a lot of balls. Junior libero Micole Daluisio tops the team with 4.86 a game, while junior outside attacker Erin Graham is second (2.93). Graham is also second on the squad in kills per game (3.89).

At the net, sophomore Annie Wachob leads the team in solo blocks (22) and assisted blocks (55).
