NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Freshman Elizabeth Bishop posted a double-double with a match-high 17 kills and 11 digs to help Cornell (9-1) beat Niagara (3-12) in three games (30-23, 30-19, 30-25) Saturday night in the Gallagher Center on the Niagara University campus.
Sophomore Michelle LeSouder (Stratford, Ont.) led Niagara with a team-high 13 kills. Classmate Erin Graham (Oakville, N.Y./Oakville Alabama) had 10 kills and sophomore Micole Daluisio (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) posted a match-high 14 digs.
"Aggressive play each time the ball is served scores points in this game," Niagara head coach Rocco Lucci said. "Our team chooses when to be aggressive and when to just go through the motions. Going through the motions doesn’t win matches."
In game one, with the score tied at 19, Cornell put together a 6-0 run for a 25-19 lead. Both teams traded four points before Niagara strung two together to pull within four, 27-23. The Big Red then tallied the final three points for the win.
Game two was also one of runs. Cornell led 20-14 and scored five-straight points, two coming on back-to-back service aces. The Big Red closed the match by winning five of the final 10 points.
In a much closer third game, Niagara led 16-15 before Cornell took advantage of three Purple Eagles errors, an ace, a block and a kill to take the lead, 20-16. The Big Red continued the attack, scoring three of the next four points to lead 23-18. Cornell never trailed for the rest of the game.
Niagara returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Syracuse for a 7 p.m. match at Manley Field House on the Orangewomen’s campus.
