Niagara University, NY- The Purple Eagles worked their way to a split Saturday afternoon as they dropped the first game of the day-day doubleheader by a score of 11-5 to the visiting Broncs. Niagara would come back strong in game two as they scored 10 runs in six innings to cruise past the Broncs 10-5.
Earning the win in Game one was James Hoey (4-4) who completed eight innings of work allowing only two earned runs. Sean Haggerty (Syracuse, NY) received the loss for the Purple Eagles working 6 2/3 innings allowing four earned runs striking out six. Mark Bomar (Austin, TX) was the only Purple Eagle to have multi hits in game one as he went 3-4 with 3 RBI.
In game two of the twin bill Rider struck first as they scored one run in the top of the first inning. Niagara would answer right back as they scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.
James Avery (Moose Jaw, SK) would turn it on from there as he threw four consecutive shut out innings. Avery would go the distance throwing seven complete innings allowing four earned runs with five strikeouts.
Mike Medici (Albany, NY) and Tim Fitzgerald (Orchard Park, NY) both had two hits in the game two. Medici was two for three with four RBI and a homerun. Fitzgerald was 2-2 with 2 runs and two walks.
With the split Rider moves to 8-9 in the MAAC and 14-18 overall. Niagara moves to 9-7 in MAAC play and 18-19 overall.
Game three of the three game series will be played Sunday afternoon at 12pm at Bobo Memorial Field.
