Purple Eagles Baseball Edged by Fairfield, 5-4

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - On a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon at Alumni Diamond the Fairfield University baseball team took the rubber game of a series with Niagara 5-4. The Stags used four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning, and held off a late charge by the Purple Eagles to come away with the win.

As rain fell throughout the day, both teams could not muster enough offense until the bottom of the fourth inning. Fairfield's (4-11-1, 2-4 MAAC) broke the ice when freshman Doug Anderson (Randolph, NJ/Delbarton) brought home junior Mike Wray (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) with a single down the left field line.

After designated hitter Andy Lynn (Montville, NJ/Delbarton) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, sophomore Greg Batista (Syosset, NY/Syosset) stepped to the plate, and came through with a line shot up the middle to bring two Stags home.

Lynn would eventually come home on a wild pitch by Niagara's (10-10, 4-2 MAAC) Mike Radanovic. In the bottom of the sixth inning freshman John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) knocked an RBI double to bring home Wray, who reached on a walk.

Niagara added four runs in the top of the ninth inning with the most damage coming off the bat of Josh McCurdy who line a two RBI single to just beyond the outstretched glove of junior third baseman Sal Mancuso (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage).

Senior Paul Gorra (Quaker Hill, Conn./Waterford) picked up the win for the Stags scattering six hits, in eight-and-two-thirds innings of work. Gorra struck out six Purple Eagles on the cold and rainy day.

Wray would go 2-for-3 at the plate for the Stags with two runs scored, while Batista would go 1-for-3 with two runs batted in.
