Baseball Splits With Charleston

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. (March 3, 2003) -- Matt Hallett blasted a solo homer and Stanley Nix drove in three runs leading College of Charleston to a 15-14 win over Niagara in the first game and a split of their college baseball doubleheader before 222 at Patriots Point Field on Sunday. Niagara won the nightcap, 15-8.

In the opener, CofC (7-5) banged out 15 hits and erased a 7-4 deficit by scoring eight times in the bottom sixth inning and then hung on for the win. Nix had three hits and scored two runs. Freshman Lee Allen had three hits and scored three runs including a pair of triples.

Niagara (2-4) got five RBI from Mark Bomar, three hits from Tim Fitzgerald and a solo homer from Greg Lehman.

Matt Jerris (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Cougars working three innings. Barry Richardson picked up the save tossing the final 2/3 innings of the game. Rylan Pranger (0-1) suffered the loss.

In the second game, Vince Ircandia went 5-for-6 with four runs and six RBI including his first homer of the season to pace Niagara. Josh McCurdy added three hits, four RBI and homer, while teammate Reed Easterly had two hits including a two-run homer.

Charleston got homers from Lee Curtis and Brett Anderson in the loss. Allen added a pair of hits and three RBI.

Mike Radanovic (1-1) was the starter and winner for Niagara allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits over six innings. Charleston Brett Harker (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season.

The Purple Eagles return to action Friday when they travel to Villanova for a 3:00 p.m. game.
