Fairfield, Conn. — Niagara (16-26, 11-15 MAAC) split a conference doubleheader against Fairfield on Saturday, dropping the first game 13-1 (7), before winning the nightcap 6-3.
Game One
Fairfield started off game one with nine runs in the first two innings. The Stags plated one run in the bottom of the first before scoring eight times in the second, highlighted by multiple two RBI singles.
Niagara got their lone run of the contest in the fifth inning when Carter Hall singled to center field to drive in Camden Sanders.
The Stags added two more insurance runs in the sixth before plating three more runs in the seventh to enact a mercy rule due to the doubleheader.
Ethan McNish-Heider got the start for the Purple and White, throwing 1.1 innings, allowing six runs on one hit. Johnny Montgomery came in for relief to get out of the second inning, allowing three runs on two hits. Jack Dickinson got the majority of the work, allowing two runs on five hits in 4.0 innings. Luke Glenn and John Ondus threw the final two innings.
Game Two
In the nightcap, Niagara got on the board first in the first inning when Vincent Mauro drove home Tyler Vivacqua with an RBI single to center field. The Purple Eagles doubled their lead in the second inning with Jacob Brooks crossing home plate.
Fairfield cut the lead to one with a solo homer in the third, but Niagara answered right back with a home run of their own in the fourth off the bat of Evan Wilde. The Stags then tied up the game in the bottom of the frame plating two runs on a fielder's choice and a wild pitch.
The Purple Eagles plated three runs in the top of the eighth to regain the lead starting with an RBI single from Curtis McKay to score Nate Milk, followed by an RBI double off the bat of Mauro to plate Vivacqua for the second time. Wilde drew to cap off the inning.
Ramirez got the start on the mound for the nightcap, throwing 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Matthew Delvecchio came in for relief, throwing 5.0 scoreless innings.
