Niagara University, NY – Niagara University Men's Hockey has partnered with SkateSkins® and Oishei Children's Hospital to bring patients' creativity to the rink in a meaningful way.
Patients from Oishei created original drawings that inspired a full set of custom SkateSkins for Niagara, NTDP and referees to wear during our annual Division I Men's exhibition game against USA Hockey's National Team Development Program (NTDP) on Friday, October 24, at Dwyer Arena. Each child's work was incorporated into the final designs, turning every pair of skates into a moving canvas of creativity, hope, and community.
The young artists will be our special guests at the game, participating in a ceremonial puck drop to kick off this meaningful evening. All fans in attendance will receive a commemorative rally towel featuring all of the artists' designs, presented by Spicy Pickle, Gallo, Choose Love Wine, Spur Vodka, Hope Totes, Niagara Barber Co., Enduraphin, Vigilink, and the Niagara Falls Police Club.
After the game, all game-worn SkateSkins will be auctioned off, with proceeds benefiting John R. Oishei Children's Hospital and its foundation.
"This project is a reminder that hockey has the power to connect people far beyond the rink," said Matthew Keeler, Founder and Owner of SkateSkins®. "These kids poured their hearts into the artwork, and seeing it come to life on the ice is something special. It's about giving them a moment to shine and showcasing their creations. Having them join us for the puck drop will make this evening even more memorable."
Head Coach Jason Lammers expressed pride in his team's participation in this meaningful initiative. "This is what hockey is all about – bringing our community together and making a difference beyond the scoreboard. These young artists from Oishei have shown incredible courage and creativity, and it's an honor for our team to wear their designs on the ice."
Captain Ethan Lund echoed his coach's sentiments, emphasizing the personal connection the team feels to the cause. "Getting to wear these SkateSkins designed by the kids at Oishei is really special. You can see the heart and imagination they put into their artwork, and it reminds us that we have a platform to make a positive impact. As a team, we're excited to represent these young artists and help raise funds for the hospital."
Phil Rhodes, Director of Hockey Operations at Niagara University, highlighted what makes this event unique. "We're thrilled to welcome members of the Oishei team, patients, and the champion kids who helped bring these skate designs to life. Having them participate in the ceremonial puck drop is going to be an incredible moment. For hockey fans in Western New York, this is a unique opportunity to experience the excitement of college hockey, watch some of the top American prospects for the 2026 NHL Draft, and support the incredible work happening at Oishei Children's Hospital."
"At Oishei Children's Hospital, everything we do is centered around our patients and their families," said Stephen Turkovich, MD, president of Oishei Children's Hospital. "This partnership with SkateSkins and Niagara University brings joy and creativity to the rink while celebrating the incredible spirit of our kids. Seeing their artwork come to life in such a meaningful way is a reminder of the strength and inspiration they bring to all of us. We're excited for our young artists to experience this special evening and be celebrated by the community."
Tickets for the game are available online with a percentage of proceeds directly benefiting the Children's Hospital of Buffalo Foundation at FEVO and at the Dwyer Arena box office. Fans are encouraged to arrive early with pregame tastings and DJ starting at 4:30pm, helping set the tone for the warmups where fans can see the custom SkateSkins designs take the ice for the first time, grab their commemorative rally towel, and witness the ceremonial puck drop featuring the talented young artists.
