Purple Eagles Defeat Penn, Fall to Fordham on Day One of Rose Hill Classic

BRONX, N.Y. – Niagara picked up a four-set win over Penn before getting swept by host Fordham on day one of the Rose Hill Classic in the Bronx, N.Y.

Match Recap: vs. Penn
First Set
• The Purple and White took a 3-0 lead to begin the first set following a kill from Laryssa Imbuzeiro and two attack errors by the Quakers.  
• After Penn took an 8-7 lead on the heels of an 8-4 run, a kill by Kinga Wronska tied the game at eight. 
• Penn would take the next point and not look back, taking the set 25-15, putting NU in an early 1-0 hole. 

Set 2
• Niagara jumped to a 9-3 lead early in the second set. Of the first nine points, three came via Lexi Bapst's kills. 
• The Purple Eagles' lead would grow to nine, 17-9, later in the set following back-to-back kills from Taylor Allen and Bapst. 
• Penn would use a 7-3 run to pull within four, 20-16. 
• Niagara regained a seven-point advantage, 23-16, following a 3-0 outburst that saw a kill from Bapst and a service ace from Wronska. 
Jenna Vogen would make it 24-19, putting NU one point away from tying it at one set apiece. 
• Bapst would record her seventh kill of the set, giving NU a 25-20 win in the second. 

Set 3
• NU again scored the first three points of the set with a kill and service ace from Wronska and a kill by Vogen. 
• Penn would pull within one, 4-3, but the Purple and White would take three of the following four points to take a 7-4 lead. 
• The Niagara lead would grow to 13-8 after a kill from Wronska. 
• Penn would make it interesting later, tying the set at 19-19. 
• After trading points to get the score to 22-22, the Purple Eagles would take the set's final three points and take a 2-1 lead over the Quakers into set number four. 

Set 4
• The two teams traded points for most of the set and found themselves deadlocked at 14-14. 
• With the score now 20-18 in favor of NU, Penn would take four of the following five points, taking a 22-21 lead over NU. 
• The purple and White would rally for four-straight points to secure the win.  

Niagara Notes vs. Penn
• Friday's match marked the first-ever meeting between Niagara and Penn. 
• The Purple and White recorded 13 block assists compared to one for the Quakers. 
• Niagara posted a .233 hitting percentage, 57 kills, 53 assists, and three service aces. 
• Bapst posted a career-best 17 kills on a total of 51 attacks. Wronska was second on the squad with 14 kills. 
Casey Brown led NU with a career-high 44 assists, doubling her previous best of 22 set against Texas Southern in 2021. 

Match Recap: Fordham
Set 1
• The Rams jumped out to an early 6-3 lead before a kill by Bapst and block by Imbuzeiro and Vogen put NU down one, 6-5. 
• A few rallies later, it was a 7-7 game before Fordham took the following two points to take a 9-7 lead. 
• The Rams would go up by five, 17-12 later on in the set before Niagara pulled back within three, 20-17, after a kill from Allie Simpson
• Fordham would take five of the following seven points to earn a 25-19 win in set one. 

Set 2
• The Purple and White took a 2-1 lead early in set two after kills from Simpson and Bapst. 
• Fordham would recapture the lead and go up by two, 4-2. 
• The Rams would then go on a 7-2 run to take an 11-6 lead over NU. 
• Niagara's final point of the set came via an attack error and made the score 23-13.

Set 3
• Niagara battled in the third set, taking an early 7-5 lead after a Kylie Blessing kill. 
• A four-point swing by Fordham gave the Rams their two-point advantage, however, Niagara would work it back to a tie at 14-14 later on in the set. 
• From there, both teams would trade points, with neither team getting more than a two-point advantage before finding themselves tied at 20-20. 
• the game would remain tied 22-22 four points later, but the Rams would get the final three points to earn a 25-22 set win to clinch the match. 

Niagara Notes
• Niagara drops to 1-3 all-time against the Rams.
• Bapst once again led NU with nine kills, followed by Vogen with seven.
• Freshman Liana Tolliver posted six kills while appearing in all three sets for the first time in her career. 
• Brown posted her third match of the season with 20-plus assists and has 101 on the season. 
• Brown was also one dig shy of a double-double, tying Bapst with a team-best nine digs.

• Niagara will play its final game of the Rose Hill Classic on Saturday, Sep. 3, when it takes on Farleigh Dickinson at 11 a.m.
