Niagara Falls To Canisius In 14-Inning Series Finale

BUFFALO, N.Y. – In their longest game of the season (14 innings), the Purple Eagles (14-28, 9-9 MAAC) fell to Canisius (22-20, 12-6 MAAC), 8-7, in their series finale on Sunday.

Game Recap
  • Niagara got on the board in the top of the first, taking a 1-0 lead over the Griffs after an RBI single from Max Giordano.
  • Canisius tied things up, 1-1, in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The Purple Eagles got back ahead in the third, 2-1, with Cole O'Connor scoring on a wild pitch.
  • The Griffs claimed their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three runs to get ahead of NU, 4-2.
  • An RBI double from Giordano in the fifth left Niagara trailing by just one run, 4-3.
  • In the top of the sixth, Matt Ward hit a solo homerun and Dawson Bailey had an RBI double to put the Purple Eagles back on top, 5-4.
  • Canisius tied things up, 5-5, in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • The teams went scoreless through the next three innings, sending the game to extras.
  • In the 13th inning, Vincent Mauro came up huge for the Purple Eagles, tripling to right center to send two runs across the plate and give Niagara the 7-5 lead.
  • The Griffs, however, got two across in the bottom of the 13th to tie the score once again, 7-7.
  • Canisius earned the 8-7 win on a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 14th inning.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Bailey and Matt Ward led the Purple Eagles in hits with two each. Giordano and Cole Tucker each added two hits.
  • Giordano and Mauro led NU in RBIs with two each.
  • Brady Desjardins and Benny Serrano each had one stolen bag for NU.
  • Jacob Bruning fanned four in 2.2 innings out of the bullpen. He allowed just two hits.
  • Ben Erwin (1-1) took the loss. He struck out three and allowed three runs on four hits in 2.0 innings pitched.
