NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – In a game that included eight combined homeruns, the Purple Eagles (14-29, 9-10 MAAC) fell to Manhattan (21-24, 9-10 MAAC), 19-12, on Friday afternoon at Bobo Field.
Game Recap
- A solo homerun from Josh Marchese in the bottom of the second inning gave the Purple Eagles a 1-0 lead over the Jaspers.
- Manhattan answered with a solo homer in the third to tie the score, 1-1.
- In the bottom of the third, Niagara reclaimed the lead, 3-1, after an RBI single from Cole Tucker and a sacrifice fly from Marchese that scored Dawson Bailey.
- The Jaspers took their fist lead of the game in the fourth frame, scoring four runs to take a two-run advantage over NU, 5-3.
- A solo homerun from Vincent Mauro in the bottom of the fourth put the Purple Eagles within one run of the lead, 5-4.
- A two-run homer for Manhattan in the top of the fifth gave the Jaspers a 7-4 lead over Niagara.
- Cole O'Connor went yard in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the Purple Eagles back within two runs of the Jaspers, 7-5.
- The Jaspers had a big seventh inning, getting five runs across to extend their lead over Niagara, 12-5.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Spencer Marcus blasted his first career homerun over the fence in center field, sending three runs home to cut the Manhattan lead to four, 12-8.
- A two-run homerun from Bailey in the eighth inning left Niagara trailing by only two runs, 12-10.
- The Jaspers, however, scored seven runs in the top of the ninth frame to take a nine-run lead over the Purple Eagles, 19-10.
- A sacrifice fly from Marcus and an RBI single from Matt Ward scored two runs for NU in the bottom of the ninth, but it was not enough to overcome the Jaspers as the Purple Eagles fell to them, 19-12, in the series opener.
Eagle's Eye On
- Marchese and Matt Ward led the Purple Eagles in hits with three each. Marchese's homerun was his team-leading 11th of the season.
- Bailey, Tucker and Brady Desjardins each added two hits for NU.
- Marcus led the team with a career-high four RBIs. Bailey and Marchese each batted in two runs.
- Evan Wilde (2-8) took the loss on the mound. He struck out two and gave up seven runs on six hits in 5.0 innings pitched.
