Purple Eagles Defeat Canisius, Secure Battle Of The Bridge Series Victory

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (14-27, 9-8 MAAC) secured the Battle of the Bridge series win after defeating Canisius (21-20, 11-6 MAAC), 6-2, on Saturday.

Game Recap
  • In the top of the first inning, Max Giordano singled up the middle, scoring Cole Tucker to give the Purple Eagles a 1-0 lead.
  • A sacrifice fly from Dawson Bailey in the second inning plated Benny Serrano to give Niagara a 2-0 advantage over the Griffs.
  • Canisius scored once in the fourth inning to cut the NU lead in half, 2-1.
  • In the top of the seventh inning, with bases loaded, Josh Marchese singled to center field, sending two runs home to give Niagara a three-run lead, 4-1.
  • The Griffs added one run in the bottom of the seventh to once again cut the NU lead in half, 4-2.
  • Serrano scored in the eighth inning to put the Purple Eagles back up by three, 5-2.
  • In the top of the ninth, a single from Brady Desjardins drove in a run and gave Niagara a 6-2 advantage.
  • Just one runner was allowed on base for Canisius in the ninth, but reliever Zach Cameron struck out the final two batters he faced, securing the win for the Purple Eagles.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Serrano led the Purple Eagles with three hits. Desjardins and Marchese each added two hits.
  • Marchese had a team-high two RBIs.
  • Giordano, Serrano and Cole O'Connor each had one stolen base.
  • Marcus Cashman (2-3) earned the win on the mound. He fanned seven and allowed just one run on three hits in 6.0 innings pitched. The Griffs went down in order in three of his six innings pitched.
  • Cameron picked up his third save of the season. He struck out three in 2.1 innings of scoreless, hitless work.
