BUFFALO, N.Y. – A grand slam from
Josh Marchese in the top of the seventh inning helped lift the Purple Eagles (13-27, 8-8 MAAC) over Canisius (21-19, 11-5 MAAC), 11-5, in a come-from-behind victory on Friday. Niagara has scored 10 or more runs in five of its last seven games and has outscored its opponents, 67-40, over those seven matchups.
Game Recap
- The Griffs took an early lead over the Purple Eagles, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead over NU.
- In the top of the second, Niagara cut into Canisius' lead. An RBI double from Brady Desjardins scored Benny Serrano and a sacrifice fly from Cole O'Connor scored Eli Selby to leave the Purple Eagles trailing by just one run, 3-2.
- The Griffs scored twice in the bottom of the second to get back ahead by three, 5-2.
- In the top of the seventh, with bases loaded, O'Connor was walked, sending Wyatt Palmer home to cut the Canisius advantage to two, 5-3. On the next play, Marchese blasted his 10th homerun of the season out of the park, sending four runs across the plate, including what would be the game-winner, to give Niagara its first lead of the game, 7-5.
- In the eighth inning, an RBI double from O'Connor gave NU an 8-5 lead. The bases were soon loaded for the Purple Eagles once again; Max Giordano was walked, scoring O'Connor. Cole Tucker then scored on a passed ball and Marchese crossed the plate after an error from the Griffs' catcher to put NU up, 11-5.
- The Purple Eagles defense held the Griffs off in the ninth and Niagara earned the exciting Battle of the Bridge win.
Eagle's Eye On
- Desjardins led the Purple Eagles in hits with two, while O'Connor, Marchese, Serrano and Dawson Bailey each added one.
- Marchese's team-high four RBIs are also his career-best.
- O'Connor recorded three RBIs, which is just one short of his career-high.
- Evan Wilde fanned seven, tying his career-high, in a 4.1-inning no-decision. He gave up five runs on eight hits.
- Kyle Smyth (2-1) earned the win on the bump in 4.0 scoreless and hitless innings of work. He struck out two.
