Niagara Earns Walk-Off Win Versus Quinnipiac

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (18-30. 12-11 MAAC) earned their second straight walk-off win versus Quinnipiac (15-32, 8-14 MAAC), defeating the Bobcats, 6-5, on Friday. Niagara is now in sole possession of sixth place in the MAAC standings.

Game Recap
  • The Bobcats scored three runs in the top of the third inning to get ahead of the Purple Eagles, 3-0.
  • A two-run homerun from Quinnipiac in the fifth inning extended the Bobcats' lead, 5-0.
  • Cole O'Connor scored the first run of the game for the Purple Eagles in the sixth inning to put NU within four runs of the lead, 5-1.
  • The Purple Eagle bats came alive in the bottom of the ninth inning. With two runners on base, Dawson Bailey doubled to right field, plating two runs to leave NU trailing by two, 5-3.
  • A sacrifice fly from Josh Marchese scored Bailey and brought the Purple Eagles within one run of the lead, 5-4.
  • With bases loaded, Matt Ward was walked, sending O'Connor home for the game-tying run.
  • With the bases still loaded, a ground-rule double from Spencer Marcus send the winning run home. 

Eagle's Eye On
  • Bailey and Marcus led NU in hits with two each. Bailey had two RBIs. 
  • Brady Desjardins had one stolen base for the Purple Eagles.
  • Marcus Cashman struck out three and allowed five runs on five hits in a 3.2-inning no-decision.
  • Ben Erwin tossed 4.2 phenomenal innings in relief. Erwin fanned a season-high seven batters, just one short of his career-high, and gave up just four hits. He did not allow any runs or walks.
  • Marty Cole (1-0) earned his first career win on the mound. He held the Bobcats scoreless and hitless in 0.2 innings out of the bullpen.

  • Niagara closes out its series with the Bobcats on Sunday, May 21 at 1:00 p.m. The Purple Eagles will celebrate Senior Day prior to the start of the game.
