JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Purple Eagles (12-26, 7-8 MAAC) won their sixth straight game, defeating Saint Peter's (6-34, 3-12 MAAC), 19-14, on Sunday to sweep their three-game season series with the Peacocks.
Game Recap
- Dawson Bailey scored after a pop-up from Benny Serrano in the top of the first inning, giving the Purple Eagles a 1-0 lead.
- In the top of the second, RBI singles from both Brady Desjardins and Bailey and a two-RBI double from Cole O'Connor put NU ahead, 5-0.
- The Peacocks got four runs across in the bottom of the second inning to cut Niagara's lead to one, 5-4.
- A sacrifice fly from Matt Ward in the third scored Max Giordano to give the Purple Eagles a two-run lead, 6-4.
- In the fourth, Bailey hit a lead-off homerun to put NU up, 7-4. An RBI single from Cole Tucker added another run for the Purple Eagles and put them in front of the Peacocks, 8-4.
- Saint Peter's scored once in the fifth, but Niagara remained ahead, 8-5.
- With bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Bailey was walked, sending Spencer Marcus home. A two-RBI single from Tucker and an RBI double from Serrano put NU ahead, 12-5. Tucker scored the final run of the inning for Niagara; he scored on a balk to give the Purple Eagles a 13-5 lead.
- In the bottom of the fifth, the Peacocks scored four runs to cut Niagara's lead to four, 13-9.
- Josh Marchese led off the sixth inning with a solo homerun to give NU a 14-9 advantage.
- Saint Peter's added two runs in the sixth to come within three runs of the Purple Eagles, 14-11.
- In the top of the seventh, with two runners on base, Giordano went yard to send three runs across the plate. An RBI double from Matt Ward later in the top half of the inning put Niagara up by seven, 18-11.
- The Peacocks scored once in the bottom of the seventh inning but Niagara was ahead by six, 18-12.
- Marchese homered for the second time in the top of the ninth inning, giving the Purple Eagles a 19-12 lead.
- The Peacocks added two runs in the bottom of the ninth but Niagara came away with the 19-14 victory.
Eagle's Eye On
- Niagara's 19 runs and 20 hits are both season-highs. The Purple Eagles scored at least one run in eight out of nine innings.
- Bailey had a team-high four hits, going 4-for-5 at the plate.
- O'Connor and Matt Ward each had three hits, while Tucker, Giordano, Marchese and Desjardins each added two.
- Bailey, Tucker and Giordano led NU in RBIs with three each. O'Connor, Serrano, Marchese and Matt Ward each batted in two runs.
- Jacob Bruning (2-4) earned the win on the mound.
