Purple Eagles Sweep Series With YSU

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (9-26) defeated Youngstown State (15-26), 3-1, on Tuesday to sweep their season series with the Penguins and extend their win-streak to three games.

Game Recap
  • Niagara picked up two hits in the bottom of the first inning, with singles from both Cole O'Connor and Josh Marchese.
  • Eli Selby hit a lead-off double in the second and Nick Castellana was walked to put two runners om base, but the next three NU batters were retired.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Brady Desjardins reached base on a fielder's choice. The Penguins were not able to successfully complete the out at home plate and Castellana got safely across, putting NU ahead, 1-0.
  • The Penguins scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth frame to tie the score, 1-1.
  • The Purple Eagles reclaimed the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single off the bat of O'Connor, which scored Benny Serrano, who doubled to lead-off the inning and then stole third base.
  • Castellana scored again in the bottom of the eighth inning to put NU up by two, 3-1.
  • The Penguins went down in order in the ninth and Niagara earned the 3-1 win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • O'Connor, Marchese and Serrano led NU in hits with two each.
  • Castellana, Selby and Serrano each had one double.
  • Serrano had a team-high two stolen bases.
  • Kyle Smyth fanned three and allowed just one hit in 3.0 innings of relief.
  • Zac Laird (1-2) picked up his first collegiate win. He struck out one in 1.0 inning pitched.
  • Ben Erwin earned his second save of the season.
