NU Earns Walk-Off Win Versus Siena

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (7-26, 3-8 MAAC) earned a 5-6 walk-off win against the Siena Saints (9-25, 6-5 MAAC) in 10 innings on Saturday.

Game Recap
  • Niagara got on the board first. In the bottom of the first inning, an error by the Saints helped send both Cole Tucker and Max Giordano across the plate to give NU a 2-0 lead. An RBI single from Matt Ward extended the Purple Eagles' lead, 3-0.
  • In the top of the second inning, Siena scored four runs to take a one-run lead, 4-3.
  • The Saints added one run in the fourth inning to get ahead of NU by two, 5-3.
  • Giordano scored on a Siena error in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring the Purple Eagles back within one run of the lead, 5-4.
  • In the bottom of the ninth innings, Cole O'Connor reached base on a fielder's choice, giving Brady Desjardins time to score and tie things up, 5-5, to send the Purple Eagles into their second straight extra-innings game.
  • Giordano was hit by a pitch to get on base in the bottom of the 10th and then stole second. Benny Serrano hit an infield single and Giordano advanced to third. Serrano then stole second to put two both runners in scoring position. Matt Ward singled to center field, scoring Giordano and earning the Purple Eagles the exciting walk-off win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Giordano, Matt Ward and Desjardins led NU in hits with two each.
  • Matt Ward had a team-high two RBIs.
  • Giordano, Serrano, O'Connor and Dawson Bailey each had one stolen base.
  • Blake MacMillan fanned five and allowed five runs on six hits in 3.1 innings pitching in a no-decision.
  • Tyler Prospero (1-0) earned the win. He struck out one and did not allow any hits in 1.0 inning pitched.
  • Combined, Niagara's four relievers (Marty Cole, Giordano, Ben Erwin, Prospero) only allowed three hits and three walks. They did not give up any runs.
