Niagara Picks Up Dominant 11-3 Win Over Siena

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (8-26, 4-8 MAAC) won their series with Siena (9-26, 6-6 MAAC), earning a dominant 11-3 victory over the Saints on Sunday.

Game Recap
  • Niagara took an early lead over the Saints, getting ahead 3-0 after an RBI single from Max Giordano, an RBI single from Eli Selby and a score on a Siena error by Giordano in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Siena scored one run in the second inning, but NU remained in the lead, 3-1.
  • In the top of the fourth, the Saints got another run across to cut the Niagara lead to one run, 3-2.
  • The Purple Eagles, however, had a big bottom of the fourth inning. RBI singles from Dawson Bailey and Cole O'Connor put Niagara up, 5-2. Bailey then scored on a wild pitch to give NU a 6-2 advantage. An RBI single from Cole Tucker got the final run of the inning across for the Purple Eagles and gave them a comfortable lead, 7-2.
  • The Saints added one more run in the fifth to get within four runs of the Purple Eagles, 7-3.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, a single to right field from O'Connor scored Bailey. O'Connor then scored on a balk to extend the lead for NU, 9-3.
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, Josh Marchese went yard, sending two runs home to put Niagara up by eight. 11-3.
  • Relief pitchers Ben Erwin, Chaz DeLuca and Steven Hospital held the Saints scoreless for the final two innings and NU came away with the 11-3 game win and 2-1 series win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • O'Connor and Matt Ward led Niagara at the plate with three hits each. Bailey, Tucker and Giordano each had two hits.
  • O'Connor and Marchese had a team-best two RBIs each.
  • Marcus Cashman fanned four and allowed three runs on six hits in a 4.2-inning no-decision.
  • Jacob Bruning (1-4) earned the win on the bump. He struck out three in 2.0 hitless and scoreless innings pitched.
