Purple Eagles Edged By Saints In Extra Innings

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – After coming back to tie the score in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Purple Eagles (6-26, 2-8 MAAC) fell to Siena (9-24, 6-4 MAAC), 10-8, in 11 innings on Friday.

Game Recap
  • The Saints took an early lead over the Purple Eagles, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. They extended their lead over NU, 8-0, in the top of the second.
  • In the bottom of the third inning, Cole O'Connor singled to right field, scoring Brady Desjardins to put NU on the board. A two-RBI single from Max Giordano cut the Siena lead to five runs, 8-3.
  • An RBI single from Desjardins in the fourth put the Purple Eagles within four, 8-4.
  • In the bottom of the sixth frame, Eli Selby singled to right center, sending two runs across the plate to put Niagara down by just two runs, 8-6.
  • Benny Serrano blasted a solo homerun over the right field fence in the seventh to put Niagara within one, 8-7.
  • In the bottom of the ninth inning, Matt Ward came up big for the Purple Eagles, hitting a solo homerun to tie the score, 8-8.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Saints went scoreless in the 10th inning, but the Saints scored twice in the top of the 11th to reclaim the lead, 10-8.
  • With one out on the board in the bottom of the 11th inning, Selby singled to right center field. Spencer Marcus pinch ran for Selby and was able to advance to second base on a passed ball, but the Saints got out of the inning to earn the win in the series-opener.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Selby led NU with a career-high three hits. O'Connor, Giordano, Matt Ward, Serrano and Desjardins each added two hits.
  • Giordano and Selby had a team-best two RBIs each.
  • Chaz DeLuca fanned three in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen.
  • Tommy Bednarski, Marty Cole and Jacob Bruning each struck out two batters.
  • Steven Hospital (1-2) took the loss. He struck out one and gave up two runs in 0.1 innings pitched.
