NU Downed By UMBC In Series Opener

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Purple Eagles (1-8) were defeated by the UMBC Retrievers (2-6), 5-2, in their series opener on Friday.

Game Recap
  • UMBC got on the board first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • In the top of the sixth, a sacrifice fly from Josh Marchese scored Cole O'Connor to leave Niagara trailing by one run, 2-1.
  • An RBI single from Dawson Bailey in the top of the seventh frame tied the score, 2-2.
  • The Retrievers, however, reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, taking a 5-2 lead over NU which they did not relinquish for the rest of the game.

Eagle's Eye On
  • O'Connor led the Purple Eagles with two hits, including one double.
  • Bailey, Cole Tucker and Max Giordano each had one stolen base.
  • Bailey and Marchese each earned one RBI.
  • Evan Wilde (1-2) took the loss. He fanned six, while allowing four earned runs on just two hits in 6.0 innings pitched.

  • Niagara plays a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. against UMBC on Saturday, March 5 and plays a single game against the Retrievers at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 6.
