LEWISBURG, Penn. – The Purple Eagles (2-11) defeated Bucknell (3-7), 8-5, in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader.
With NU ahead 12-0 in the top of the fifth inning, the second game of the day was called due to darkness and does not count. Niagara's third game with the Bison, scheduled for Sunday, March 12, has been canceled due to expected inclement weather.
Game Recap
- Dawson Bailey opened scoring with a lead-off homerun in the top of the first. A sacrifice fly from Cole Tucker, also in the top of the first, scored Cole O'Connor and NU led, 2-0, after one inning.
- A two-RBI single from the Bison in the bottom of the second tied the score, 2-2.
- Niagara reclaimed the, 4-2, in the top of the sixth after an RBI double from Brady Desjardins and a sacrifice fly from O'Connor.
- A solo homerun from Josh Marchese in the top of the seventh inning gave NU a three-run lead, 5-2.
- Bucknell tied things up once again, 5-5, in the bottom of the seventh.
- In the top of the ninth, Nick Casellana scored on a throwing error by Bucknell's third baseman. Max Giordano then singled up the middle, driving in two runs to put NU ahead, 8-5.
- The Purple Eagles retired the Bison in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn the 8-5 win.
Eagle's Eye On
- Giordano and Marchese led NU in hits with two each.
- Giordano had a team-high two RBIs.
- Steven Hospital (1-0) earned the win. He struck out one and did not allow any hits in 1.1 innings pitched.
- Evan Wilde fanned four in 6.2 innings pitched in a no-decision start.
