MARION, N.C. – The Niagara baseball team (1-7) fell to UNC Asheville (3-5), 8-6, in the final game of a four-game series on Sunday.
Game Recap
- The Bulldogs got on the board first, scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
- The Purple Eagles answered quickly in the top of the second. An RBI single from Dawson Bailey tied the score, 1-1, and an RBI single from Cole O'Connor gave NU the lead, 2-1. Bailey added one more run for Niagara in the second, scoring on an error to put NU ahead, 3-1.
- A two-run homerun from UNC Asheville in the bottom of the second inning tied the score, 3-3.
- The Bulldogs got one run across in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead, 4-3.
- In the top of the fifth frame, a two-RBI single from Wyatt Palmer put Niagara back on top, 5-4.
- Bailey scored on a passed ball in the sixth inning to give NU a two-run lead, 6-4.
- The Bulldogs scored two runs in the sixth to tie things up again, 6-6.
- UNC Asheville reclaimed the lead, 8-6, in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- In the ninth, Cole Tucker singled to left center with just one out on the board, but an inning-ending double play earned the Bulldogs the two-run victory.
Eagle's Eye On
- Bailey, Tucker, Palmer and Liam Ward each had two hits for the Purple Eagles.
- Palmer had a team-high two RBIs and Bailey led the team in runs scored with two. Bailey also had one stolen base.
- Zac Laird (0-1) took the loss. He fanned a career-high four batters in 1.0 inning pitched.
