MARION, N.C. – The Purple Eagles (1-6) dropped a pair of games to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs (2-5) on Saturday.
Game One – UNC Asheville 6, Niagara 0
Game Recap
- Wyatt Palmer had the first hit of the day for the Purple Eagles, singling to second base and then advancing to second on a wild pitch in the top of the second to put NU in scoring position. He was out, however, on the next play after a fielder's choice to end the top half of the inning.
- Liam Ward had a lead-off single in the top of the third, but NU was not able to capitalize and the teams remained scoreless going into the home half of the third. The Bulldogs, however, score in the third to take a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
- Josh Marchese singled in the fourth, but NU was not able to score.
- In the bottom of the fifth, UNC Asheville scored three runs to take a 4-0 lead over Niagara.
- Marchese picked up another hit in the seventh, singling to center field to lead off the inning.
- The Bulldogs extended their lead, 5-0, in the bottom of the seventh frame.
- In the top of the eighth, Dawson Bailey had an infield single with two outs on the board to put NU in scoring position, but the Bulldogs got the third out to keep Niagara off the board.
- The Bulldogs added one run in the eighth and retired the Purple Eagles in order in the ninth to earn the 6-0 shutout.
Eagle's Eye On
- Marchese led the Purple Eagles with two hits.
- Jacob Bruning (0-2) took the loss on the mound. He struck out three and allowed one earned run on five hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
- Nick Veselinovic made his collegiate debut in the eighth inning and fanned two batters.
Game Two – UNC Asheville 2, Niagara 1
Game Recap
- Cole O'Connor had the first hit of the game for the Purple Eagles in the first inning.
- The Bulldogs scored in the bottom of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead.
- Matt Ward doubled down the left field line in the top of the fourth. Marchese then singled, advancing Ward to third base, but Ward was thrown out at home plate to end the away half of the inning.
- Benny Serrano bunted in the fifth to get on base, but the Purple Eagles remained scoreless.
- In the top of the sixth, O'Connor was walked and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cole Tucker reached base on an error by the Bulldogs, giving O'Connor enough time to score to tie things up, 1-1.
- It was a pitcher's duel, with the teams remaining scoreless until the bottom of the ninth inning. An RBI single for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the nine secured them the 2-1 win.
Eagle's Eye On
- Matt Ward had two hits for the Purple Eagles.
- Marcus Cashman (0-1) took the loss, tossing 8.0 innings and striking out six. He gave up two earned runs on two hits.
