ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Purple Eagles (1-4) earned their first win of the season, defeating the UNC Asheville Bulldogs (0-5), 7-4, on Friday.
Game Recap
- The Purple Eagles got on the board in the first inning. Although Cole O'Connor was out, he earned an RBI as Dawson Bailey was able to cross the plate to put NU ahead, 1-0.
- An RBI single from the Bulldogs in the bottom of the third tied the score, 1-1.
- In the top of the fourth, Matt Ward scored an unearned run, putting the Purple Eagles back in the lead, 2-1.
- Josh Marchese hit a lead-off homerun in the top of the sixth frame and an RBI single from Liam Ward soon after gave Niagara a three-run lead, 4-1.
- In the top of the seventh, O'Connor smacked a lead-off homerun over the center field fence and Matt Ward blasted a two-run homer to left field to extend the Niagara lead, 7-1.
- The Bulldogs added three runs in the eighth, but the Purple Eagles earned the win, 7-4.
Eagle's Eye On
- Matt Ward recorded his first career homerun and first career triple. He went a career-best 3-for-5 at the plate and scored a career-high three runs.
- O'Connor, Marchese and Brady Desjardins each added two hits.
- O'Connor and Matt Ward each had two RBIs, which is a career-high for Ward, while Marchese and Liam Ward each had one.
- Evan Wilde (1-1) picked up his first win as a Purple Eagle. He fanned six, while allowing five hits and just one earned run in 5.1 innings pitched.
- Ben Erwin earned the save.
