NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Despite a first-half lead, the Purple Eagles (8-10, 3-6 MAAC) were narrowly defeated by the Rider Broncs (6-12, 2-6 MAAC), 70-67, on Sunday.
Game Recap
First Half
- The Purple Eagles and the Broncs went back and forth to open the game and a 3-pointer from Marcus Hammond gave NU a one-point lead, 9-8, a little less than five minutes into the half.
- The Broncs took a 13-9 lead over NU, but the Purple Eagles went on an 11-0 run, including triples from Rob Brown III, Noah Thomasson and Justin Roberts, to take a 20-13 lead over Rider.
- Roberts hit three straight 3-pointers to extend Niagara's lead, 29-17, with about eight minutes left on the clock.
- Jordan Cintron added eight points in the remainder of the half and Sam Iorio had five, helping the Purple Eagles to a 42-25 lead at halftime.
Second Half
- The Broncs went on a 21-2 run to open the second half and took a 46-44 lead over the Purple Eagles with about 12 and a half minutes remaining in the game.
- A trey from Hammond put the Purple Eagles back in the lead, 47-46.
- Rider scored six straight points to reclaim the lead, 52-47, with a little under nine minutes to go.
- Two free throws from Iorio and another three from Hammond tied the score, 52-52.
- The Broncs, however, went on a 13-5 run to get back ahead of the Purple Eagles, 65-57, with 1:25 remaining in the second half.
- Brown III sank a 3-pointer to leave Niagara trailing by just five points, 65-60.
- Layups from Cintron and Thomasson and a triple from Iorio left NU down by just two points, 69-67, but the Broncs held on to earn the three-point win, 70-67.
Eagle's Eye On
- Iorio led the Purple Eagles in scoring with 14 points. He also brought down seven rebounds.
- Hammond and Cintron both added 13 points. Cintron led NU in rebounding with eight boards and had a team-high two steals.
- Roberts scored 12 points and went 4-for-6 from 3-point range.
- Thomasson dished out a team-high eight assists and added seven points.
- NU shot 62.5 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from three in the first half.
