ALBANY, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (8-11, 3-7 MAAC) were narrowly defeated by the Siena Saints (7-8, 4-3 MAAC), 60-56, on Friday night at MVP Arena.
Game Recap
First Half
- The Purple Eagles and the Saints traded buckets and four points from Sam Iorio helped NU to an early 6-4 lead.
- NU scored five straight points, including three from Jordan Cintron and a dunk from Noah Thomasson, to take an 11-6 lead over the Saints with a little under 13 and a half minutes on the clock.
- The Purple Eagles and Siena continued to go back and forth. A 3-pointer from Rob Brown III and a jumper from Thomasson gave NU a two-point lead, 22-20.
- The teams tied the score twice in the remaining five minutes of the half, but NU had the lead, 26-24, going into halftime.
Second Half
- Early in the second half, Iorio converted a 3-point play and had a layup to give the Purple Eagles a five-point lead, 35-30.
- Two jumpers from Cintron helped keep the Niagara lead at five, 39-34, with about 13 and a half minutes left to go.
- A bucket from Brown III kept NU ahead, 41-38, with a little over 10 minutes left in the game.
- The Saints, however, went on a 7-0 run to take the lead, 45-41.
- Two points each from Brown III and Thomasson put Niagara back within two points of the lead, 47-45, with just over five minutes left to play.
- Siena got ahead, 52-47. A jumper from Thomasson kept NU close, 52-49, but the Saints soon took a six-point lead, 56-50.
- Four more points from Cintron left Niagara down by just four points, 58-54, with 31 seconds left on the clock.
- The Purple Eagles, however, were not able to overcome the Saints in the final seconds of play, falling to Siena, 60-56.
Eagle's Eye On
- Iorio recorded his first double-double of the season with 15 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
- Thomasson also added 15 points and brought down six rebounds.
- Cintron scored 13 points and had a team-high three steals. He also brought down five rebounds.
- Brown III added nine points for the Purple Eagles.
- Justin Roberts led the team in assists with three.
