Hockey Defeated By Air Force In Series Finale

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Purple Eagles (6-12-2, 5-7-2 AHA) fell to Air Force (7-11-2, 5-7-2), 3-2, in the series finale on Saturday.

Game Recap
First Period
  • Walker Sommer and Albin Nilsson had two early chances for NU, but both their attempts were saved.
  • Between Sommer and Nilsson's opportunities, the Falcons scored to take a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles a little under four minutes into the period.
  • Sommer put the Purple Eagles on the board 10:30 into the period, scoring NU's first short-handed goal of the season to tie the score, 1-1.
  • Jordan Wishman, Carter Randklev, Sommer, Ryan Cox and Nilsson had chances in the remainder of the period, but Niagara and Air Force went into the first intermission tied, 1-1.
Second Period
  • Shane Ott had the first opportunity for the Purple Eagles in the second period, but his shot was saved.
  • A little over six and a half minutes into the period, Air Force scored on a power play to reclaim the lead, 2-1.
  • Christian Gorscak and Jack Zielinski had two chances for NU midway through the period, but neither shot found its mark.
  • The Falcons scored another power play goal with about four minutes remaining to take a two-score lead, 3-1.
  • Jon Hill took the final shot of the period for NU, but it was saved by the Falcons' goaltender.
Third Period
  • The Purple Eagles quickly created chances in the third period, with shots from Noah Carlin, Ryan Naumovski, Ott, Josef Mysak and Chris Harpur all within the first six minutes.
  • A little over seven minutes into the period, Lars Rodne netted his second goal of the season, leaving Niagara down by just one, 3-2.
  • The Purple Eagles continued to create scoring opportunities, with Nilsson, Naumovski, Carlin, Mysak, Sommer, Rodne, Zac Herrmann and Harpur all having chances, but Air Force kept Niagara off the board to come away with the 3-2 win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Naumovski and Ott led NU in shots with three each. Sommer, Nilsson, Rodne and Mysak all had two shots.
  • Gorscak had a team-best two blocked shots.
  • Michael Corson (0-2-0) made 16 saves in 36:39 in goal.
  • Jake Sibell played 21:28 in goal and had nine saves.
