Niagara Falls to Canisius 4-0 Thursday Night

BUFFALO, NY – Despite out-shooting Canisius, 33-27, the Purple Eagles fell to the Golden Griffins by a final score of 4-0 Thursday night in Atlantic Hockey action from the Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Niagara is now 3-10-2 overall and 3-4-2-1 in AHA play.

Game Recap
First Period
• The Purple Eagles found themselves down 1-0 after 20-minutes of action. 
• Niagara won nine of the frame's 16 face-offs and put a total of seven shots on goal during the opening stanza. 
Christian Gorscak had three of the teams seven shots on goal for Niagara.
Chad Veltri made 12 saves in the stanza.
• The Niagara penalty kill went 2-for-2, while the power play unit was 0-for-1 in the first. 

Second Period
• Niagara got two power-play chances early in the second – but couldn't even the score. 
• At the media timeout, the Purple Eagles were out-shooting Canisius 12-1 in the period. 
• Canisius made the score 2-0 at the 15:47 mark of the second.
• After two periods of play, Niagara had 21 shots on goal, and 18 face-off wins. 
Ryan Cox had three shots on target in the second to pace the Purple Eagle offense. 

Third Period
• Niagara put 12 shots on goal in the final period, trying to get back into the game. 
Zac Herrmann, who finished the game with three shots on goal, had one of Niagara's best scoring chances from the high slot, but the Canisius goalie secured the puck. 
Olivier Gauthier almost beat the Canisius keeper, coming around the backside of the net but was unable to score and get Niagara on the board.  
• Canisius would score two insurance goals in the third, giving the game its 4-0 final. 

Niagara Notes
• Niagara out-shot its opponent for the seventh time this season and recorded 30-plus shots on goal for the sixth time.  
Chad Veltri finished the game with 23 stops, his eighth game recording 20 or more saves. 
• Gauthier led the team with five shots, followed by Chris Harpur and Cox with four apiece. 
Albin Nilsson and Cox won a combined 20 face-offs for the Purple and White, who finished the game with 29 total face-off victories.
• Niagara finished the game 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and 0-for-3 on the power play.
