Nilsson Nets Game-Winner against Canisius

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Albin Nilsson scored the game-winner as Niagara defeated Battle of the Bridge rival Canisius 3-2 Friday night in Atlantic Hockey Action from Dwyer Arena.
 
Niagara is now 4-10-2 overall and 4-4-2-1 in Atlantic Hockey action.
 
Game Recap
First Period
• Canisius found the back of the net first, scoring the game's opening marker at the 12:57 mark of the first period. 
• The Purple Eagles had three solid chances to even the score in the first period, including back-to-back shots by Luke Edgerton and Shane Ott, both of which were stopped by the Canisius netminder. 
• Niagara finished the frame with nine shots on goal and a total of 22 shots.
• The Purple and White had the slight edge on face-offs in the opening Stanza, winning 9-of-17.
 
Second Period
• With Canisius leading 2-0, Niagara would score its first goal of the night via the power play. Shane Ott beat the Canisius goalie for his third goal of the season. Edgerton and Ryan Naumovski were awarded the assists. 
• The period would come to a close with the Purple Eagles trailing the team south of the bridge, 2-1. 
• Niagara once again edged Canisius in shots, 15-13, for the period. 
• the Purple Eagles killed off three penalties to help keep the game within one goal.
Chad Veltri made 12 of his 18 saves in the middle frame, including two big saves in the final few minutes of the period to keep the score where it was.
 
Third Period
• Niagara took 27 shots in the third period, with 12 landing on target. However, it wasn't until the final seconds that one finally found the back of the net. 
Ryan Cox, with Niagara on a 6-on-3, got one by the visiting team's netminder for his fourth of the season, tying the game 2-2 with 6-seconds left.
• Niagara pulled Veltri with nearly four minutes remaining on the clock and kept him off until the equalizer.
• In that time frame, the Purple and White would take a total of five shots, with the last one from Cox finding its target. 
• For the third period, Niagara had 12 shots on goal, compared to just three for Canisius.
 
Overtime
• Niagara would spend a majority of the overtime period with a man-advantage as Canisius received a five-minute major penalty with seconds remaining in regulation.
• Nilsson scored the game-winner from just inside the right circle with 1:37 remaining in the extra frame, lifting Niagara to a 3-2 win. 
• For Nilsson, the goal was his fourth of the season. Edgerton and Josef Mysak got the assists. 
 
Niagara Notes
• Friday marked the 100th career game for Luke Edgerton. The senior recorded two assists in the game, his fourth and fifth helpers of the season. 
• Nilsson and Cox are now tied for second on the team with four goals apiece. 
• The Purple and White are now 4-3-2 when scoring on a power play and 2-0-0 when scoring multiple power-play goals. 
• Niagara is 3-2 in the last five meetings with Canisius and 7-8-2 against its arch-rival under head coach Jason Lammers
 
Up Next 
• Niagara is off until the New Year, when it travels to South Bend, Ind., for two games against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. The first game of the series is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. puck drop on Jan. 1.
