Men's Basketball Opens 2021-22 Season At Xavier

The Purple Eagles officially open the 2021-22 season at Xavier on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. This is the 11th all-time meeting between Niagara and the Musketeers and the game will be broadcast on FS1.

2020-21 In Review
•  The Purple Eagles went 9-11 overall and 7-9 in conference play in 2020-21.
•  Niagara led the MAAC in turnover margin (+3.25), assist to turnover ratio (1.19) and averaged the fewest turnovers per game (9.9).
•  The Purple Eagles ranked sixth in the nation in fewest turnovers per game and 22nd in turnover margin.
•  Niagara earned the No. 5 seed in the MAAC Championships. The Purple Eagles defeated No. 4 Marist, 67-62, in the quarterfinals before falling to No. 9 Iona, 70-64, in the semifinals.
 
 
Preseason Honors
•  Senior guard Marcus Hammond was named to the Preseason All-MAAC First Team, announced by the conference on October 19.
•  Hammond, who was an All-MAAC Second Team honoree in 2020-21, averaged 12.7 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game. He led the Purple Eagles in rebounding and was second on the team in scoring.
•  Hammond's 1.7 assist to turnover ratio was the second-best in the conference.
•  Hammond started in all 20 games during the 2020-21 season and was named MAAC Player of the Week three times.
•  He finished the 2021-21 season eighth in the MAAC in both assists per game (3.0) and free throw percentage (.765). He was 11th in 3-pointers per game (1.8), 12th in rebounding and 13th in scoring.
 
 
Exhibition Highlights
•  The Purple Eagles played an exhibition game against the Cazenovia Wildcats on Monday, Nov. 1. NU defeated Cazenovia, 95-55.
•  It was Niagara's first game in front of fans in the Gallagher Center in over 600 days (Feb. 29, 2020).
•  Justin Roberts went 8-for-10 from the 3-point line and led the Purple Eagles in scoring with 24 points.
•  Sam Iorio led the Purple Eagles in rebounding with eight boards. He also added 15 points.
•  Marcus Hammond added 13 points for NU.
•  Noah Thomasson dished out a team-high six helpers and Rob Brown III led the team in steals with three.
