NU Defeated By Wolverines Despite Early Lead

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Despite leading early, the Purple Eagles (2-8-2) fell to No. 4 Michigan (12-4-0), 4-1, on Saturday night.

Game Recap
First Period
  • Christian Gorscak had three early opportunities for the Purple Eagles, but all three of his shots were saved. Ryan Cox and Carter Randklev also created chances, but their shots were also saved by the Michigan goaltender.
  • With the Purple Eagles on the power play, Josef Mysak scored his first goal of the season to give Niagara a 1-0 lead over the Wolverines. He was assisted by Chris Harpur and Cox.
  • Jon Hill and Jordan Wishman each had two chances for NU in the remainder of the period.
  • The Purple Eagles led Michigan, 1-0, going into the first intermission.
Second Period
  • Niagara peppered the Wolverines' defense with shots in the first five minutes of the period, with Harpur, Cox, Albin Nilsson, Gorscak, Mysak and Jason Pineo all creating chances for the NU offense.
  • The Wolverines scored a little over six minutes into the period to tie things up, 1-1.
  • Brandon Stanley took two back-to-back shots about halfway through the period, but both were saved.
  • Jesse Pomeroy, Gorscak, Stanley and Zac Herrmann all tried to create chances for the Purple Eagles late in the period, but the teams remained tied, 1-1, going into the third period.
Third Period
  • Lars Rodne and Luke Edgerton has opportunities for the Purple Eagles in the first few minutes of the third period, but neither shot found its target.
  • The Wolverines took a 2-1 lead 8:48 into the period and scored a power play goal at 12:13 to extend their lead, 3-1.
  • Gorscak and Herrmann each took shots in the 17th minute of play; both were blocked.
  • Michigan scored an empty net goal at 16:53 and held the Purple Eagles scoreless for the remainder of the period to come away with the 4-1 win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Gorscak led the Purple Eagles in shots, while Hill and Stanley each added three.
  • Wishman blocked a team-best four shots.
  • Chad Veltri (2-3-1) made a season-high 35 saves.
  • Niagara led in blocked shots, 18-11.
