NU Falls To No. 8 North Dakota In Series Finale

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Purple Eagles (0-2) fell to the No. 8 North Dakota Fighting Hawks (2-0), 4-0, in the teams' series finale on Saturday night.

Game Recap
First Period
  • The Fighting Hawks struck quickly, scoring in the second minute of play to take a 1-0 lead over NU.
  • Niagara created early opportunities, peppering the North Dakota defense with seven shots from 1:41 to 3:47. Brandon Stanley and Shane Ott's shots went just wide, one of Albin Nilsson's shots was blocked and Nilsson, Ryan Cox, Zac Herrmann and Ryan Naumovski all had shots that were saved by the UND goaltender.
  • A little over 10 minutes into the period, the Fighting Hawks went on the power play, but the Purple Eagles successfully killed the penalty.
  • Chris Harpur and Christian Gorscak both had chances for NU late in the period, but both shots were saved.
  • NU trailed by just one, 1-0, going into the first intermission.
Second Period
  • Niagara had another successful penalty kill early in the second period, but the Fighting Hawks scored on their next power play, taking a 2-0 lead over NU.
  • The Purple Eagles went on their first power play 8:06 into the second period. Walker Sommer had a chance for NU, but it went wide of the net and the Purple Eagles were not able to capitalize.
  • Two-minute, concurrent roughing penalties on both teams left the Purple Eagles and the Fighting Hawks playing 4-on-4. North Dakota scored to extend its lead, 3-0.
  • Two shots from Ott and one each from Jason Pineo and Sommer created opportunity for NU, but none of the shots found their mark.
  • NU had another successful penalty kill late in the period and closed out the period on a power play.
Third Period
  • Although the Purple Eagles were not able to capitalize on the 1:33 remaining in their power play to open the third period, they were on the power play once again a little over two minutes into the period. Cox had a chance for NU, but his shot was blocked.
  • Niagara fired five shots at the Fighting Hawks from 7:01 to 10:46, forcing North Dakota into taking a timeout.
  • The Fighting Hawks scored a second power play goal a little over 17 minutes into the period to take a 4-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Pineo and Harpur took the final shots of the period for NU as the Purple Eagles fell to the Fighting Hawks, 4-0.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Sommer, Cox, Gorscak and Ott led the Purple Eagles in shots with two each.
  • Harpur and Herrmann had a team-best three blocked shots each.
  • In his collegiate debut, goaltender Jake Sibell (0-1) made 21 saves. He made nine saves in both the first and second periods.
  • Overall, the Purple Eagles blocked 13 shots and won 24 face-offs.
