Purple Eagles Defeated By Nittany Lions

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Purple Eagles (0-3-0) fell to the Penn State Nittany Lions (4-1-0) on Thursday.

Game Recap
First Period
  • Jack DeBoer and Jason Pineo had the first chances of the game for the Purple Eagles, but both their early shots were saved by the PSU goalie.
  • DeBoer had another opportunity in the sixth minute, but it was blocked.
  • Albin Nilsson and Ryan Cox had good opportunities for NU on a power play, but neither shot found its mark.  
  • The Nittany Lions scored a little over 11 and a half minutes into the period to take a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Mike Faulkner, Noah Carlin and Walker Sommer all had late opportunities for NU, but NU went into the intermission trailing, 1-0.
  • Chad Veltri (0-2-0) made 16 saves in the first period.
Second Period
  • In the first five minutes of the second period, Niagara created chances, including two shots from Brandon Stanley and one each from Jon Hill, Pineo and Sommer, but they were all saved by PSU's goaltender.
  • Penn State scored a little over six minutes into the period and scored again at 17:35 to extend its lead, 3-0.
  • Shane Ott took the final shot of the period for NU, but it was saved.
  • Veltri made 14 saves in the second period.
Third Period
  • The Nittany Lions scored a little over a minute into the third period to take a 4-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Ryan Naumovski, Pineo and Herrmann all had strong chances for NU over the next four minutes, but all three shots were saved.
  • Sommer and DeBoer tried to create opportunity for the Purple Eagles on a power play, but neither shot made it past the Penn State goalie.
  • Niagara was on the power play again a few minutes later; two shots from Sommer were both saved.
  • Olivier Gauthier took back-to-back shots, but neither found its target.
  • The Purple Eagles closed out the game on a power play, with Pineo creating a strong opportunity, but NU was not able to capitalize and fell to the Nittany Lions, 4-0.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Veltri made 34 saves in the game.  
  • Sommer led the team in shots with five, while Pineo had four.
  • Stanley blocked a team-high three shots. Jesse Pomeroy, Chris Harpur, Nilsson, Faulkner and Jack Zielinski each blocked two shots.
  • The Purple Eagles were perfect on the penalty kill.
  • Niagara led in blocked shots, 22-3.
