The Niagara women's lacrosse team will play its first home game of 2020 tomorrow afternoon when Merrimack pays a visit to Monteagle Ridge for a 12 p.m. opening draw. The game was originally slated to be played today, February 20, but due to cold temperatures, the game was postponed for player safety.

Matchup Preview
  • This marks the first-ever meeting between these two schools. Merrimack College made the jump to Division I from Division II during the offseason, and is now a member of the Northeast Conference.
  • Under head coach Wendy Stone, the Purple Eagles have a 6-5 record against current NEC schools.
  • Against current NEC schools, Niagara is 18-21 all-time. Niagara was 1-1 against schools from the NEC last season, taking down Central Connecticut State, 16-6, and falling at Bryant.

Niagara Notes
  • The Purple Eagles opened their season in Boston this past weekend. They narrowly dropped their opener, 17-12, on February 14. At Harvard two days later, the Crimson came out on top, 15-3.
  • Midfielder Jenna Brill exploded for six points (5 G, 1 A) in the first weekend of play. Brill accounted for five points (4 G, 1 A) against the Terriers before adding another late goal against Harvard. The four goals and five points in the game at BU set new personal bests for the sophomore.
  • Aubrey DeVeau started both games in net for Niagara over the weekend, playing a total of 97:38. At BU, the senior stopped 13 shots. She added eight more saves in just under 40 minutes of work at Harvard to give her 21 on the weekend.
  • Entering this season, Alina Del Toro had one career goal. She tripled that output by registering her first career hat trick at BU on Friday.

Milestone Watch
  • Paul enters Thursday's game with 71 career caused turnovers, second-most in program history. She is currently 18 back of Alexandra Higgins ('18) for the most all-time (89).
  • Paul also has 106 career ground balls, tied for seventh-most of any Niagara player.
  • With 21 saves this past weekend, DeVeau entered the Niagara record books by cracking the program top-10 in that category. She now ranks ninth with 117, 52 back of Tammy Araynosi ('97) for eighth place (169).
  • Maren Geiger (4) and DeVeau (2) both have excellent chances to move up the all-time wins list. Both already rank in the top-10 for the category, and would enter the top-5 by notching their seventh career victories.

Scouting the Warriors
  • In their first season of DI play, the Warriors are 1-2 in their first three contests.
  • Merrimack got its first win at the DI level on February 16 at Canisius, 10-9. The Warriors fought off a late comeback by the Golden Griffins to score the game-winner with 19 seconds left in regulation.
  • Senior attack Ally DaCosta leads the squad with 10 points (3 G, 7 A) in three games played this season.
  • Tammy Nguyen has played all 180 minutes in net for the Warriors this season, compiling a .411 save percentage and a 14.33 goals-against average in the team's first three games.
