The Niagara men's soccer team begins its 2019 season this weekend in Michigan. On Friday, the Purple Eagles take on the Detroit Mercy Titans before squaring off against the Western Michigan Broncos on Labor Day.

Niagara Notes
  • As the new season begins, Niagara welcomes 11 freshmen to the team, including local products Hlaku Gay, Kyle Hofschneider, and Yousif Kowa.
  • Junior college transfer Anton Mullen is another new face this season. Mullen spent the past two years with Herkimer CCC.
  • Niagara's lead scorer from a year ago, Luca Pacheco, returns for his junior season. The native of Burlington, Ontario earned 12 shots on goals last season and scored four times.
  • Head coach Bill Boyle enters his fourth season at Niagara.
 
Across The Pitch: Detroit Mercy Titans
  • The Titans went 0-1-1 in exhibitions against DePaul (1-1 T) and Northern Illinois (1-0 L). Collin Cavanaugh scored the team's lone goal against the Blue Demons.
  • Last season, Detroit Mercy finished with a 1-14-3 overall and an 0-6-2 record in the Horizon League.
  • The Titans' two leading scorers from 2018, Ben Al-Gharabally and Jake Reitzloff, are both back in the fold this year. Reitzloff logged a pair of goals in 1018 minutes of action last season, while Al-Gharabally netted two of his own in just 285 minutes.
  • This will be head coach Nicholas Deren's 10th season at the helm of the Titans.
  • The only other matchup between Detroit Mercy and Niagara came back in 2014. Detroit Mercy defeated Niagara, 1-0.
 
Across The Pitch: Western Michigan Broncos
  • The Broncos earned a 1-0 win over Wright State in their first exhibition match of the fall. They wrapped up the preseason slate with a 1-1 draw at No. 9 Notre Dame.
  • Western Michigan opens its regular season on Friday, August 30 in Indiana against Butler.
  • Cameron Sipple, the squad's leading scorer from a year ago (6 G, 4 A), graduated out of the program. Sophomore Zack Shane (4 G, 3 A) is the team's top returning scorer.
  • Lukas von Lienen will be back in net for the Broncos in 2019. As a freshman, von Lienen played over 1439 minutes, going 8-3-3 with a save percentage of .758 and three clean sheets.
