Men’s Soccer Defeats Canisius to Advance to the MAAC Tournament

Niagara University, N.Y. – Niagara men's soccer team takes down cross town rival Canius 2-0 to clinch the fifth seed in the MAAC Tournament at Niagara Field in Niagara University, N.Y.
 
Both teams went into the break tied at zero with Niagara out shooting Canisius 5-0.
 
Senior Zachary Applewhite kicked off the scoring in the 65th minute of action off a penalty kick. The Golden Griffins defender got caught using a hand ball that awarded Niagara with the penalty kick. Applewhite faked out the keeper and tucked it away in the bottom left side of the net.
 
Of the bench New Baltimore, MI native Tommy Mittelstadt II added the Purple and White's second goal of the contest in the 83rd minute of action. Applewhite dished an inviting ball to Mittelstadt inside the 18-yard box where Mittelstadt jumped up and headed the ball to give Niagara a 2-0 advantage.

• Going 6-0-1 at home this season breaks the previous record 5-0-1 set in 2012
Zachary Applewhite recorded his first goal as a Purple Eagle
• Applewhite also scored his first collegiate goal since September 16, 2023, while at Mount Olive
• Mittelstadt recorded his second goal of the season first goal since the season opener against St. Bonaventure
