Purple Eagles Split Doubleheader With The Bonnies

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles split a homerun-filled doubleheader with Little 3 rival St. Bonaventure on Tuesday.

Game Recap
  • The Bonnies kicked things off in the top of the first with a solo homerun to take a 1-0 lead over Niagara. Peter Battaglia answered with an explosive two-run homerun for the Purple Eagles in the bottom of the inning to put NU in the lead, 2-1.
  • In the top of the third, a two-run homerun from St. Bonaventure put the Bonnies back in the lead, 3-2, and an RBI double in the top of the fifth frame extended their lead, 4-2.
  • The Purple Eagles, however, were quick to even the score. Michael Gabriele singled to left field, driving in two runs to tie things up, 4-4. Battaglia then went yard again, blasting a three-run homer over the left field fence to put Niagara back in the lead, 7-4.
  • RBI singles from Alex Zulia and Gabriele in the bottom of the sixth iced Niagara's 9-4 win over the Bonnies.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Battaglia led the team in RBI with five. He also added two hits and two runs scored.
  • Gabriele had a team-high three hits and recorded three RBI and two runs scored.
  • Zulia and Darian Blanks each scored two runs.
  • Battaglia, Zulia and Blanks each had one stolen base.
  • Jacob Bruning started on the mound, striking out four and walking just one in 3.2 innings pitched.
  • James Walker (1-0) earned the win. He fanned two and allowed just one earned run in 2.0 innings pitched.

Game Recap
  • The Bonnies took a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a score on a sacrifice fly and a two-run homerun. St. Bonaventure extended its lead, 8-0, in the top of the second, adding five more runs, which included a three-run homerun.
  • In the bottom of the third, Battaglia sent his third homerun of the day out of the park to leave Niagara trailing by seven, 8-1.
  • An RBI single from the Bonnies in the fourth stanza extended their lead, 9-1.
  • Niagara had a strong fifth inning. RBI singles from Battaglia and Cole O'Connor, as well as a sacrifice fly from Joseph Tevlin, brought the Purple Eagles within five runs of the Bonnies, 9-4.
  • St. Bonaventure added on one more run in the sixth to take a 10-4 lead.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, Max Giordano went yard, sending two runs across the plate to cut the St. Bonaventure lead to four, 10-6. It was not enough, however, to overcome the Bonnies as they earned the game two victory.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Giordano led the Purple Eagles with three hits and two stolen bases and added two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Battaglia had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Evan Kiser (0-1) took the loss on the mound. He struck out three and allowed eight hits and eight runs in 1.2 innings pitched.
