Purple Eagles Drop Close Contest To Iona

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Playing through fog and rain, the Purple Eagles dropped a close 9-8 game to the Iona Gaels in their series opener on Friday.

Game Recap
  • Peter Battaglia kicked things off for the Purple Eagles in the bottom of the first inning, blasting a three-run homerun over the center field fence to give NU a 3-0 lead. It was Battaglia's team-leading seventh homerun of the season.
  • The Gaels scored twice in the top of the second to cut Niagara's lead, 3-2, but an RBI single from Dawson Bailey in the bottom of the inning put the Purple Eagles up by two, 4-2.
  • An RBI single and a two-run homerun for Iona in the third frame gave the Gaels their first lead of the game, 5-4. A solo homerun in the top of the fifth extended Iona's lead, 6-4.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, however, Max Giordano put the Purple Eagles back on top, 7-6, with a three-run homerun.
  • The Gaels reclaimed the lead, 8-7, in the seventh inning after a two-RBI single. A solo homerun in the ninth put Iona in the lead by two, 9-7.
  • A sacrifice fly from Giordano in the bottom of the ninth scored Alex Zulia to put Niagara back within one run of the Gaels, 9-8, with two outs on the board, but Iona retired the final Purple Eagle batter to come away with the series-opening win.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Battaglia and Zulia led the Purple Eagles with three hits each. Battaglia and Joseph Tevlin each had one double.
  • Giordano led the team in RBI with four, while Battaglia had three.
  • Zulia scored a team-high three runs.
  • Tyler Howard started on the mound, striking out two and allowing six earned runs in 4.0 innings pitched.
  • Tommy Bednarski (1-4) took the loss. He fanned two and allowed two earned runs in 2.0 innings pitched.
