After making the last regular season trip out of Western New York, the Niagara men's hockey team returns to Dwyer Arena, opening a four-game homestand against Sacred Heart this weekend. Saturday's afternoon game will be "First Responders Night," with discounted tickets available to all emergency responders and their families. The contest will also be followed by the team's final open skate of the year, while both games will be followed by open postgame press conferences with head coach Jason Lammers and several players.

Matchup Preview
  • The men's hockey team welcomes the Sacred Heart Pioneers for teams' only regular season matchups of 2018-19.
  • Last year, the two programs both took a pair of wins home from enemy territory. Niagara earned the sweep in Bridgeport on October 27-28 while Sacred Heart stole both games at Dwyer Arena on February 9-10.
  • Both teams are in the thick of a tight Atlantic Hockey playoff race, with Niagara ahead of Sacred Heart by a single point with one game in hand.
  • Niagara holds a 13-7-2 advantage in 22 all-time meetings.

Niagara Notes
  • The Purple Eagles are hoping to bounce back after falling to AIC, 6-4 and 6-3, last weekend.
  • Stenlund finished the month of January with 10 points (5G, 5A) which earned him two Rookie of the Month awards, one from Atlantic Hockey and the other from the Hockey Commissioners' Association, the team's first national monthly honor since 2011. The freshman tallied goals in five of the team's six games, with multi-point games in three of those outings.
  • Stenlund stepped on the ice for the first time in February and picked up where he left off by posting a second straight four-point weekend (3G, 1A) at AIC. By scoring in the two games, Stenlund extended his goal streak to six games, a new program record. The feat earned him his second AHA Rookie of the Week award of the year.
  • The Purple Eagles have combined to score 87 goals and 139 assists (226 points) as a team this season. Of those, 94 points (39 G, 55 A), or 42 percent, have been scored by freshmen.
  • Niagara's rookies are leading the nation in points (94), assists (55), shorthanded goals (5) and points per game (3.48). They also rank second nationally with 39 goals and 1.44 goals per game.
  • Goaltender Brian Wilson ranks first in the conference in saves per game (27.67).

Scouting The Pioneers
  • In their last six Atlantic Hockey outings, the Pioneers have taken points in five of them (4-1-1).
  • The Pioneers have a record of 7-4-1 on the road compared to being 3-9-2 at home.
  • On special teams, Sacred Heart is currently second in Atlantic Hockey in penalty killing (.858) and is last in the conference for powerplay success (.125)
  • First-year forward Austin Magera leads the Pioneers with eight goals and 11 assists in 26 games. The Pioneers have three players tied for second in goals with seven apiece.
  • In the crease, freshman Josh Benson has played in 17 games this season, earning a 8-7-2 record along with a 2.36 goals-against-average and a .911 save percentage. Senior goalie Brett Magnus has seen action in nine games, posting a 2-6-1 record, 3.17 GAA, and a .896 SV%.
