GAME NOTES Niagara | Opponent

A home-and-home with the Mercyhurst Lakers is the next challenge for the Niagara men's hockey team. The Purple Eagles will travel to Erie, Pennsylvania for a Friday night throwdown before the series shifts to Dwyer Arena on Saturday evening.

Matchup Preview
  • This is the first of two home-and-home series between Mercyhurst and Niagara this season. The second will see the Lakers visit on February 2 before the teams head down the I-90 the following day.
  • In their lone series last season, the Purple Eagles swept the Lakers by 7-3 and 5-4 margins at home on January 18 and 19.
  • Niagara is 3-11-3 in its last 17 meetings with Mercyhurst. The Lakers have defended home ice well over the past five seasons, going 8-0-2 against the Purple Eagles in the last 10 games away from Dwyer Arena. Niagara's last road triumph in the series was a 4-2 win on February 23, 2013.
  • All-time, the Purple Eagles are 14-15-4 against Mercyhurst.

Niagara Notes
  • The Purple Eagles split their most recent series at Canisius. The Golden Griffins won the first outing, 4-2, before Niagara bounced back with a 5-3 victory.
  • In the win over Canisius, Ryan Naumovski recorded an assist on each of the team's five goals. He also supplied one the night before to account for six total assists on Niagara's seven goals during the series. The performance helped earn Naumovski his first Rookie of the Week nod from Atlantic Hockey.
  • Justin Kendall posted three goals – including his first multi-goal game on November 15 – against the Griffs this past weekend. The junior forward now leads the Purple Eagles in goals (3) and is tied for the team lead in shots on goal (23).

Scouting The Lakers
  • Mercyhurst has had an up-and-down start to its season through the first 10 games. The Lakers knocked off then-No. 20 Arizona State in Tempe in their season opener, and have posted additional wins over St. Lawrence and Bentley in series splits. Their most recent weekend was another split, this time with defending AHA champion AIC. The Lakers bounced back from a 12-0 drubbing in the first game to take game two from the Yellow Jackets, 4-3, in overtime.
  • Steven Ipri leads the Lakers in goals (6) and points (13).
  • Nationally, Mercyhurst's goals against per game (4.70) ranks dead last in the nation.
  • The Lakers' penalty kill ranks second-to-last in the country (.654). On the flipside, the team's power play (.255) is 10th among Division I sides and leads the conference.
