BUFFALO, N.Y. — In preparation for the MAAC Cross Country Championships, the Niagara cross country teams competed at the annual Canisius Alumni Classic on Saturday afternoon. The men's side finished 11th out of 12 teams, while the women beat Canisius on a tiebreaker to claim fourth place.

- Annina Marullo finished in 20:01.8, good for 35th.
- Julia Freemire's time of 20:24.9 made her the fourth Purple Eagle to cross the finish line
- Rounding out the team score was Erin Murray, whose 5k clocked in at 20:34.2.
- Niagara posted 134 points, level with Canisius, but finished ahead of the Golden Griffins thanks to the Purple Eagles having more runners finish with winning places.
Meet Marks (Men)

- With a mark of 28:02.2, William Schwarzmueller came through next for the Purple Eagles.

- The final team time came from Kevin Verdejo, who posted a time of 28:45.1.
- Three runners (Schwarzmueller, Verdejo, and Bobby Adams) set new 8k personal bests. Adams' new mark is 28:55.0.
Coach's Corner
- Head coach Christine Kloiber: "We had another good showing today and we are super pleased with how the season has been unfolding. The course was a little slow and spongy from the rains earlier in the week so we knew it wasn't going to be as fast as Lehigh, but it was a good tune-up for our athletes to race competitively."
- On the women's side: " We had a team cold that impacted a few of our athletes, so we know if everyone was healthy we would have had a higher team placing overall. It is still very encouraging as we head into the conference meet a couple of weeks from now. We managed a couple of bonuses, on top of a day that already saw Nora and Meggie place in the top 20: Emma posted an NU PR and Erin's first attempt at a cross country 5k turned out to be a good race."
- On the men's side: "Even with a sluggish course, Bobby, Kevin, and Will all set PRs and Joe set a season best. The guys have been doing an excellent job working together, especially Bobby and Kevin/ The more that they work together, the faster they go. Will had a great day, and the consistency with Joe and Spencer has been integral to increasing fitness as a whole in each outing. Theoretically that's what we aim to do each season, but it's up to the athletes to ensure they get there, and they have definitely been banding together to do everything they can to do so."
