Volleyball Earns Thrilling Five-Set Victory Over Saint Peter's

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. –The Niagara women's volleyball team closed its first home weekend with a thrilling five-set victory over the Saint Peter's Peacocks.

Match Summary
First Set
  • The Purple Eagles and the Peacocks found themselves in a close contest in the first set, with neither team leading by more than three points throughout the set.
  • Saint Peter's was up by three late, 22-19, before Niagara rallied off three consecutive points to tie the score, 22-22
  • After Saint Peter's took the lead again on the next point, Niagara won the next three points to take the set 25-22.
Second Set
  • After the teams split the first four points, 2-2, Saint Peter's took control of the set, leading by as many as 12 points before taking the set by a score of 25-16 and tying the match, 1-1.
Third Set
  • The Purple Eagles started off strong in the third set, taking a 9-6 lead.
  • Saint Peter's found themselves in the driver's seat for the rest of the set however, including rallying off the last five points in the set to win 25-15 and take the lead in the match, 2-1.
Fourth Set
  • The Purple Eagles dominated the fourth set, holding the lead for the entire set. Niagara led by as many as seven before earning a 25-23 win in the fourth set to send the match into a fifth and final set.
Fifth Set
  • Saint Peter's led 10-5, before Niagara gained momentum by winning four of the next five points.
  • The Purple Eagles tied the score at 12 apiece before fending off the Peacocks en route to a 16-14 win in the set to clinch the match victory.

Eagle's Eye On…
  • Caroline Leitch led the Purple Eagles in kills with 19, which ties her career-high. Leitch also had two total blocks.  
  • Jaycie Roberts led the team with a season-high 19 digs and finished with 11 kills.
  • Reva Blitz had a team-high four aces, along with a career-high 19 digs.
  • The win marks first-year head coach Donna Day's first victory in the Gallagher Center.

Up Next
  • The Purple Eagles return to the road next weekend for a pair of matches against MAAC opponents. Niagara first travels to Manhattan on Sept. 29, and then faces off with Iona on Sept. 30. Both matches are slated to start at 1 p.m.
