HAMDEN, Conn. – The Purple Eagles split a doubleheader with the MAAC leaders, Quinnipiac, on Saturday.
Game 1: Quinnipiac 6, Niagara 3
- A solo homerun from the Bobcats (21-25, 12-5 MAAC) in the bottom of the first inning gave Quinnipiac a quick 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles (18-23, 8-9 MAAC).
- In the top of the fourth, an RBI single from Peter Battaglia tied the score, 1-1.
- The Bobcats regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth frame, 3-1, after a two-run homer.
- Quinnipiac extended its lead, 6-1, in the bottom of the sixth.
- In the top of the eighth, a score from Trevor McCauley put the Purple Eagles down by only four runs, 6-2.
- A score from Julian Gallup in the ninth halved the Bobcats' lead, 6-3, but the Purple Eagles could not overcome Quinnipiac's defense and fell in game one.
- Gallup led the Purple Eagles with two hits.
- Battaglia and Philippe Langlois each had one RBI.
- Cody Eckerson (2-5) took the loss on the mound, fanning eight in 5.2 innings pitched.
Game 2: Niagara 10, Quinnipiac 6 (7 innings)
- The Purple Eagles took the early lead in game two. Owen Dziados singled up the middle, scoring Gallup and Michael Gabriele to put NU up, 2-0, in the top of the first.
- Quinnipiac answered quickly in the bottom of the first with a two-run homerun to knot the score, 2-2.
- In the top of the second, Joseph Tevlin singled through the left side, plating Wyatt Olson. Greg Cullen singled through the right side to score Benny Serrano and put the Purple Eagles back on top, 4-2.
- Niagara extended its lead, 6-2, in the top of the fourth inning with scores from Gallup and Gabriele.
- The Bobcats scored once in the bottom of the fourth, but NU held steady on defense and continued its momentum on offense.
- In the top of the sixth, McCauley doubled to right field, sending Cullen home. A two-RBI single from Olson kept NU comfortably in the lead, 9-3.
- Quinnipiac crept toward NU's lead, 9-6, thanks to back-to-back homeruns in the bottom of the sixth.
- An RBI double from Dziados in the top of the seventh closed out scoring and the Purple Eagles came away with the 10-6 victory.
- Dziados, Gabriele and Olson led NU in hits with three each.
- Dziados had a team-high four RBIs, tying his season-high.
- On the mound, Matthew Brash (2-1) earned the win. He struck out five in 5.1 innings pitched.
- Ben Erwin earned his first save of the season, fanning three in 1.1 innings pitched.
