Baseball Downs The Bonnies, 11-9

OLEAN, N.Y. – The Niagara baseball team downed St. Bonaventure, 11-9, on Wednesday to sweep its season series with the Bonnies.

Game Recap
  • In the top of the first, Owen Dziados singled through the right side, scoring Michael Gabriele. Olson singled up the middle to send Benny Serrano home and give NU a 2-0 lead over the Bonnies.
  • St. Bonaventure scored once in the bottom of the first and once in the bottom of the second to tie things up, 2-2.
  • In the top of the third, Peter Battaglia hit a two-run homerun, putting the Purple Eagles back on top, 4-2.
  • The Bonnies dominated the next three innings and led Niagara, 9-4, going into the seventh inning.
  • In the top of the seventh, Olson homered, also scoring Dziados to put NU down by only three run, 9-6.
  • Niagara began to pick up momentum on offense in the top of the eighth. McCauley doubled down the right field line, scoring Serrano. A ground out from Dziados scored Battaglia and an RBI single from Olson tied up the score, 9-9.
  • In the top of the ninth, McCauley doubled to left center, scoring Battaglia and Gabriele to give the Purple Eagles the 11-9 lead. NU held off the Bonnies in the bottom of the ninth and came away with the victory.

Inside the Numbers
  • Olson led the Purple Eagles with a career-high four RBIs.
  • McCauley had three RBIs and Battaglia and Dziados each had two.
  • Olson and McCauley led the team in hits with three each and McCauley had a team-high two doubles.
  • On the mound, Brett Cook (1-0) earned the win. He struck out one in 2.0 innings pitched. Alex MacKinnon earned the save.
