HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Niagara baseball team split a doubleheader at Marshall on Saturday. The Purple Eagles fell to the Herd, 11-1, in seven innings in game one and defeated Marshall, 7-4, in game two.
Game 1: Marshall 11, Niagara 1 (7 innings)
- Marshall (9-4) dominated the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Herd scored once in the first and second innings, before tacking on five runs in the third inning. The Herd extended their lead, 10-0, in the sixth inning.
- The Purple Eagles (2-7) got on the board in the top of the seventh inning. Steven Kokoski singled to center field to score Trevor McCauley and put the score at 10-1, with Marshall in the lead.
- Marshall added on one more run in the seventh to come away with the 11-1 victory.
- Kokoski, Peter Battaglia and Greg Cullen each had one hit and Kokoski had one RBI.
- Jackson Jones (0-2) started on the mound. He fanned four and allowed five earned runs in 4.0 innings pitched.
Game 2: Niagara 7, Marshall 4
- The Purple Eagles started off strong on offense in game two. In the top of the second, Michael Gabriele doubled to left field to score McCauley and Owen Dziados. Philippe Langlois then scored on a wild pitch to give NU a 3-0 lead and, with bases loaded, Battaglia was walked, scoring Gabriele to extend Niagara's lead, 4-0.
- Marshall scored twice in the bottom of the second to cut Niagara's lead in half, 4-2. The Herd scored once more in the fourth and trailed by only one run, 4-3, going into the fifth inning.
- Niagara, however, continued its momentum. In the top of the sixth, Joseph Tevlin singled up the middle to send Gabriele home. Runs from Tevlin and Dawson Bailey gave the Purple Eagles a 7-3 lead.
- The Purple Eagles held Marshall to only one more run for the remainder of the game and earned the 7-4 victory over the Herd.
- Gabriele and Dziados led Niagara with two hits each.
- Battaglia and Gabriele each had a team-high two RBIs and Gabriele hit a team-best two doubles and scored a team-high two runs.
- On the mound, Ben Erwin (1-1) picked up his first collegiate win. He fanned three and allowed only one earned run in 5.0 innings pitched.
