Baseball Drops A Close Pair To Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Purple Eagles dropped a pair of close games to the Longwood Lancers on Saturday.

Game 1: Longwood 8, Niagara 7
  • Niagara (1-2) got on the board first in the top of the third. Julian Gallup singled to short to score Steven Kokoski and put NU up, 1-0.
  • The Lancers (2-4) tied things up, 1-1, in the fourth inning and then had a monster fifth inning, scoring six runs to take a 7-1 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • The Purple Eagles began to close the gap in the sixth inning. With Trevor McCauley and Peter Battaglia on base, Wyatt Olson doubled to left center, sending both runners home. Then, with bases loaded, Darian Blanks was hit by a pitch, scoring Olson to put NU down by only three runs, 7-4.
  • Longwood scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to extend its lead, 8-4.
  • In the top of the ninth, Greg Cullen hit a three-run homer to put Niagara down by only one, 8-7. A fly out from the Purple Eagles, however, ended the inning and the Lancers came away with the win.
  • Cullen led the team with three RBIs and Gallup, Olson and Owen Dziados each had a team-high two hits.
  • Olson and Kokoski each had one double.
  • On the mound, freshman Ben Erwin earned the start, striking out one and allowing one earned run in 4.0 innings pitched. Alex MacKinnon (0-1) took the loss, fanning one and allowing six earned runs in 1.0 innings pitched.

Game 2: Longwood 5, Niagara 4
  • With bases loaded in the top of the first, McCauley was walked, scoring Gallup to put NU up 1-0 on the Lancers.
  • Longwood tied things up, 1-1, in the bottom of the fourth and tacked on three more runs in the seventh to take a 4-1 lead.
  • In the top of the eighth, McCauley singled to advance Cullen to second and score Gallup. Olson then reached base on an error by the right fielder and both Cullen and McCauley scored to tie things up, 4-4.
  • Niagara was held scoreless in the top of the ninth and one run from the Lancers in the bottom of the ninth gave them the doubleheader sweep.
  • McCauley had a team-high two RBIs and Cullen had a team-best two hits. Gallup led the Purple Eagles in runs scored with two.
  • Jackson Jones started on the mound, fanning three in 4.0 innings pitched. Matthew Grace (0-1) took the loss for the Purple Eagles.
